Abstract

Background and Aims: Palmar psoriasis is associated with prominent epidermal and dermal alterations, yet the histological pattern of lesions examined during the summer season remains insufficiently characterised. his descriptive histopathological study aimed to describe the pathomorphological changes in the skin of patients with palmar psoriasis, based on biopsies obtained during the summer season.

Study Design: Descriptive histopathological (biopsy-based) study.

Place and Duration of Study: Department of Pathological Anatomy, Multidisciplinary Clinic of Samarkand State Medical University, using biopsies from patients registered at the Samarkand Regional Branch of the Republican Specialized Scientific-Practical Center for Dermatology and Cosmetology, during the summer season.

Methodology: Skin biopsies from 27 patients were examined. Tissue pieces (0.5×0.5×0.4 cm) were fixed in 10% neutral formalin, passed through an alcohol series, embedded in paraffin, sectioned at 5–7 μm, and stained with haematoxylin and eosin.

Results: Spongiosis was observed in the spinous layer during the summer season. Slight swelling of collagen and reticulin fibres was noted in the well-developed papillary dermis. Destruction of elastic fibres and a decrease in their number were detected. In the reticular layer, collagen and elastic fibres were well developed, with slight swelling also noticeable.

Conclusion: The histopathological pattern observed in these summer biopsies — spongiosis, mild dermal oedema, and elastic-fibre destruction — characterises epidermal and dermal remodelling in palmar psoriasis during this period. As no non-summer comparator was examined, these findings describe a summer-associated morphological profile rather than a proven seasonal or temperature-specific effect; comparative studies across seasons are needed to test this.

Keywords: Epidermis, dermis, spongiosis, blood vessels, elastic fibres, vascular congestion, hyperkeratosis
