Chronic suppurative otitis media (CSOM) is characterized by a persistent discharge from the middle ear through a perforated tympanic membrane (TM) associated with partial hearing impairment, which is one of the most common childhood infectious disease also having high prevalence in adult worldwide. Prevalence of CSOM in Bangladesh is known to be 3-13% among the school going children. Although antibiotics are generally prescribed for initial therapy against infection in CSOM; however, the conventional antibiotic therapy faces a number of problems including high price, diarrhoea and nausea as side effects and notably antibiotic resistance. In this present case study three CSOM adult patients were treated with homeopathic drugs (Tellurium and Calcium Fluoride) and justified in three different parameters, (a) TM examination with an digital endoscopic otoscope, (b) hearing threshold measurement at 1, 4, 8 and 12 kHz frequencies using an iPod, and (c) microbiological analysis of the aural swab before and after the treatment. The study results demonstrated that applied homeopathic doses could be able to improve cicatrized tympanic membrane and hearing threshold level significantly within 2-4 months depending on the disease history, which is a remarkable outcome in the treatment of CSOM.
